Stingless bee honey is produced by tiny Trigona stingless bee.Kelulut honey has a distinctive mix of sweet and sour profile and is silky smooth in taste.
Trigona bees often make their hives in tree stump in crevices between roots in the wild. The nests are not the regular honeycomb in hexagonal shaped structure but is a jumble of uneven size conjoined honeypots in intricate arrangements. These pots are manufactured by Trigona bees to store honey and pollen and they are made with plant resins. Honey is harvested by puncturing holes in the pots and honey is then drained out with a sucking device.
Trigona bees are tiny in size (almost the size of a house fly) hence, its ability to suck nectar from flowers in deep and tight spaces which contain high minerals and vitamins properties. The end result is premium honey of superior benefits.
Stingless bee honey has a wide range of antimicrobial activitiy against various types of bacteria, fungi and viruses. Several studies have indicated Kelulut honey's high antioxidant activity from its abundant flavonoids and polyphenols content.
